Adam Wa Mishmish is an educational cartoon created for children to learn and love the Arabic language. In order to enhance learning beyond educational videos, an app was developed. The purpose of the app is to help kids build a strong foundation, from learning the Arabic alphabets, numbers, learning to read, write and speak in Arabic.
Children in the early years, ages 0 to 5. Their was also a parental section to book in classes with a teacher.
As the sole designer, I ensured to follow the already established branding and style guide for Adam wa MishMish. The project included creating wireframes, demonstrating prototypes to discuss progress with the clients and UI mockup screens.
This would be the first project I would be designing an app for children in the early years, ages 0 to 5. Due to the age of the target user, I would need to heavily research how children between those ages best learn, perceive information and interact with apps.
During this research phrase, I discovered the following:
Enabling parents to actively participate and customise the learning content their child engages with enhances the educational journey. Parents have the ability to choose the type of lessons they want their child to learn each month. These lessons can either be instructed by the parents themselves or arranged through payment for scheduled sessions with a teacher.
If a parent has more than one child, they can create multiple accounts to customise the experience to suit their child's learning.
Kids tend to have brief focus periods. Implementing a reward system can help prevent boredom and distractions. After all lessons in a task has been completed, a badge is earned. Bright colours, animation, illustrations and sound collectively maintain children's interest in the app.
The badges are a fun way for kids to see them as collecting stickers when they finished a class. This was positive encouragement to continue learning.
Every lesson comprised flashcards, reading, video watching, and additional activities, all supported by a parent assisting the child.
Children interact and learn content in many different ways. Instead of having a 'one size fits all' approach. The team opted to allow parents or children to select their preferred learning style. This flexibility enables them to switch to another activity if they don't find a particular one enjoyable.
A parent can choose the lessons in each class. Each class has a duration of 1 month before it will expire. Once expired, the parent can choose the same or different lessons based on their child's level of understanding. A parental code was introduced to ensure a child didn't accidentally find themselves on the wrong page. This also helps parents feel in control and choose whether they want to teach their child or find a teacher for them.
